, they're going to stand with president obama at the white house to accept his nomination for defense secretary and cia director respectively. neither choice is a shock and neither is likely to have an easy go at the senate confirmation process because you know that's coming up. joining me now with the sin sights on this and the expert e expertise, gloria borger and chief national correspondent john king. in the interest of the new year's resolution to be positive, let's start with the pros, gloria borger. let's go over the list with chuck hagel as the starting point. he's a war hero. and he has two purple hearts from vietnam serving alongside of his brother. each of them saving each other's life which is a story unto itself. and he went on to represent a native nebraska in the u.s. senate and now he co-chairs the president's intelligence advisory board. that sounds like a pretty good cv, they say. what's not to like? >> well, if you're in the white house, you say that's the reason his confirmation should be smooth sailing. but, you know, he was a two-term senator and when you're a t
think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama is going to be an in your face term. >> foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty is live from washington this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> opposition to hagel comes from the right and left. can you break down the issues? >> yeah. i think it has to really start with israel because the people who believe that he is not a supporter of israel, in fact, they would question his devotion to anything that would help israel. he, for instance, believes in talking to hamas. he also has come out against iran sanctions by the united states. and so that gets other people very worried about his position. he opposed the surge in afghanistan. and when you get into that issue, the gay issue, so called, about 14 years ago he made some comments about an ambassadorial nomination who as he put it was openly and aggressively gay. now that's, of course, a buzz saw of criticism. so it's not going to be an easy type of nomination certainly as you can imagine. >> so why did the president pick ha

this nomination, this is something that those close to president obama feel good about, that they feel ultimately he will be able to clear the senate and this was something obviously that was out there for some time. and that this was a decision that the president came to perhaps not too difficultly. but i think something that struck me and we just heard what president obama said there, was that when he referenced that chuck hagel knows america stands strongest when it stands with allies, that seemed to be answering that criticism that some have had about his position on iran, some critics particularly republicans saying that he's been soft on iran, that he hasn't been a friend of israel, the white house has been emphasizing that while hagel has been skeptical as they put it of unilateral sanctions against iran, they have been stressing his votes, supporting sanctions against iran and the context of a coalition including the u.s. sort of opposing iran with the sanctions. and that is obviously something he'll emphasize in his confirmation process. the other thing, wolf, i think this factored into

that washington wld operate a little bit differently now that obama had been re-elected. and, you know, if you're a conservative republican you could argue that you wanted to beat obama at the ballot box, but if you could don't that, then it's time to cooperate with him. i think the last few weeks have showed us that that's not the lesson that most republicans took away from the election. and we're in for bitter, acrimonious debate for the rest of the year. very, very hard to see how much gets accomplished. and, you know, as you point out, they had months and months to deal with this so-called sequester, the automatic spending cuts, and they couldn't do it. they'll do something because they have to, but i wouldn't be too optimistic about kumbaya washington returning anytime soon. >> i agree with you there. president obama has said, though, the gun violence, immigration, they're at the top of his second-term agenda. will he find any support in congress with all this going on? >> if you look at his agenda, gun control, immigration, and these fiscal issues, they are the three issues that divide d
